A Message from Bill Boyajian
Vision is a vital component of leadership. Successful business leaders have the ability to see their company as they want it to be, and aspiring leaders know it as an essential task of leadership.

The growth of the international gem and jewelry industry over the years illustrates the great many leaders who had such a clear vision and were able to guide their companies to reach their goals. They have not only led their own firms to profitability and growth, but also inspired others to do the same.

As I travel the globe on behalf of the World Jewelry Center, the enthusiastic responses from business leaders in every country prove that they share the vision of this unique international marketplace for gems and jewelry, and its unlimited potential. From my most recent trips to major shows in Hong Kong, New York, and Istanbul, to earlier visits to Tel Aviv, Mumbai, and Tokyo, the leaders I met with left no doubt that they understand how the WJC can help them expand their markets and grow their businesses – and they want to be part of it.

The steady increase in the number of Letters of Intent we have received is, of course, the ultimate proof of how firmly the concept of the WJC is being adopted. Please click here to see the current world map depicting the names and locations of these companies. We have now signed 60 firms – an increase of 50 percent in five weeks. Further details can be found elsewhere in this issue of Insights.

It is also noteworthy that, even at this relatively early stage, we are realizing our goal to have every major sector of the gem and jewelry marketplace and every major country and nationality represented in the WJC. We will strive to maintain this character in WJC participants.

We are also working diligently to secure the benefits of a Foreign Trade Zone for everyone who purchases office space in the trade tower. By allowing goods to be brought into the World Jewelry Center duty-free, a Foreign Trade Zone will be an especially important benefit for companies with extensive overseas manufacturing of dutiable goods. Unless the imported goods are sold, they can be re-exported without paying duty in the U.S. As a result, the cost savings on the time value of money from when goods are imported until they are sold can be substantial. We are consulting with one of the foremost experts in this field to ensure this is thoroughly covered in every detail.

In the next few weeks, the WJC will have a major presence at the international shows in Basel, Vicenza, and Las Vegas. We will also make presentations in Mumbai, Dubai, and Moscow. Please e-mail us at info@worldjewelrycenter.com for a personal presentation in any of these locations.

We can also schedule a Web cast presentation at your convenience. I look forward to sharing the vision of the World Jewelry Center with you.

Five DTC Sightholders Among WJC Participants WJC Participants Increase by 50% in Five Weeks

Five World Jewelry Center participants are among the 93 Sightholders on the 2005–2007 list published by the De Beers Diamond Trading Company (DTC). According to the DTC, Sightholders offer a range of benefits, such as “well-established distribution capabilities, close knowledge of the DTC's marketing plans and ideas; and effective marketing support in partnership with the DTC through: brand development, advice on display and in-store merchandising, and sales training for staff.”

All DTC Sightholders must also comply with the DTC's Diamond Best Practice Principles, which require that all diamond treatments be disclosed; synthetics are not traded as natural diamonds; and diamonds are not affected by conflict, human suffering or exploitation. Here are the five current WJC participants who are Sightholders, along with a profile.

Shrenuj & Company, Ltd. – Founded in 1906, the Shrenuj Group specializes in high-tech diamond cutting (including laser equipment) at its Mumbai plant to supply polished diamonds in a variety of shapes and sizes. The company also produces finished jewelry. Shrenuj is an authorized manufacturer for the Platinum Guild International and also a partner in the DTC’s Solitaire program, Arisia.

Kiran Exports – Specializing in round brilliants and princess cuts in all sizes, Kiran Exports serves its worldwide clients with an extensive range of polished diamonds. The company’s manufacturing facilities in Gujarat, India use state-of-the art technology, including laser machines, auto planners, and auto bruting, while emphasizing knowledgeable craftsmanship in every phase of the manufacturing process.

C. Mahendra (NY) LLC – It is a licensed group company of C. Mahendra Exports, and specializes in a wide range of polished diamonds in various cuts and sizes. They provide goods for both jewelry manufacturers and retailers. They also manufacture finished jewelry, including their own brand, Ciemme, which is marketed in India and internationally.

Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Co., Ltd. – A vertically integrated diamond and jewelry conglomerate, Chow Tai Fook operates three diamond cutting factories in South Africa and China. It is Hong Kong’s leading jewelry manufacturer and retailer. The company has 340 retail stores and franchises in Hong Kong, China, and Macau.

Tasaki Shinju Co., Ltd. – Founded in 1954 as a pearl company, Tasaki Shinju has evolved into a vertically integrated diamond and pearl company. Tasaki Shinju gained Sightholder status in 1994, and now performs its own diamond cutting and polishing and diamond jewelry design and manufacturing. They operate 63 retail stores, including the Tasaki Shinju Ginza Store in Tokyo.

Riding a wave of momentum that began in late 2006 and rapidly gained strength in 2007, the World Jewelry Center (WJC) has now signed 60 companies to Letters of Intent (LOI) to be part of the new international jewelry hub — an increase of 50 percent in just five weeks.

After signing on an initial group of 10 leading firms by the time plans for the WJC were announced last October, the number grew to 41 by mid-February, after a flurry of presentations in the U.S. and overseas by WJC Managing Director Bill Boyajian and his team. The leap to 60 followed another series of worldwide presentations and trade show visits in February and March, backed by a comprehensive marketing, advertising, and publicity campaign.

“Our recent trips to Istanbul, New York, and Hong Kong were just the latest that revealed the strong interest the World Jewelry Center has generated throughout the trade,” said Boyajian. “We have not only received uniformly enthusiastic responses to our presentations, but also consistent growth in the companies who are joining. Clearly, leaders across the industry are increasingly grasping the WJC’s vision and the benefits of being part of such a unique global marketplace.”

The 60 participants signed to this point account for a total of 164,000 square feet of building space in the WJC trade tower. “We are well ahead of schedule in reaching the milestones set for whole ownership office condominiums,” Boyajian noted; “and I’m fully confident this trend will continue. In the coming weeks, we will press ahead with a major presence at the international trade shows in Basel, Vicenza, and JCK Las Vegas.”

“We will also be present at the AGS Conclave in Denver, the ICA Congress in Dubai, and make presentations in Mumbai and Moscow. We invite business leaders throughout the industry to make an appointment for a personal presentation as we travel to their part of the globe, or to contact us for a Webcast presentation at a time of their convenience.”

The latest firms to sign LOIs include: M.J. Christensen; Betlach; Susan Eisen Fine Jewelry & Watches; R.H. & Company; Silver Star Jewelry; Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company; Exclusive Gems; Cora International LLC; Gemological Institute for Precious Stones; Caretta, Inc.; Gold & Diamond Inc., Houston; Oro Diamante; Canadian Gem; Liberty I. Exchange; Mason-Kay; Steven L. Miller Professional Law Corporation; and David Tishbi Handcrafted Jewelry; and Global-Findings.com Group, Ltd.

Hearts On Fire Joins WJC to Expand Its Global Reach

When officials of the De Beers Diamond Trading Company (DTC) launched their Supplier of Choice program in 2000, they might have envisioned a company like Hearts On Fire as a model for increasing demand for diamonds through improved marketing and innovative branding strategies. At that time, Hearts On Fire, founded in 1996, was already engaged in its global branding campaign, based primarily on its beautifully cut and proportioned round brilliant, and backed by a powerful and comprehensive marketing program.

Six years later, the results would validate such a vision, as Hearts On Fire has emerged as the world’s most dominant branded diamond, and the firm continues to grow. In a new initiative to further leverage its brand and gain additional market penetration, Hearts On Fire has signed a Letter of Intent to purchase a significant amount of space in the World Jewelry Center (WJC), the new international hub for the gem and jewelry industry in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“The World Jewelry Center is an ideal business platform to support our long-range goals and objectives,” said Hearts On Fire CEO and Founder Glenn Rothman. “First, Las Vegas provides a myriad of advantages, from international transportation and high-tech communications to favorable business policies.”

In addition, said Rothman, the concept of the WJC fits well with Hearts On Fire’s plans. “The international gem and jewelry marketplace established by the World Jewelry Center will be an important catalyst in further growing the Hearts On Fire brand. Not only can it serve as a North American distribution center in a strategic location, but the presence of hundreds of dealers and manufacturers, plus gem labs, support services, and a Foreign Trade Zone, can greatly enhance our operations.”

World Jewelry Center Managing Director Bill Boyajian said the addition of Hearts On Fire exemplifies the benefits all companies gain in signing on with the WJC. “It’s especially noteworthy when an industry leader like Hearts On Fire is added to the who’s who of companies now comprising the World Jewelry Center. Glenn Rothman is clearly a visionary who has set a remarkable standard in diamond branding and marketing. His confidence in the future of the World Jewelry Center is another sign of the momentum propelling this project.”

Headquartered in Boston, Hearts On Fire’s diamonds and diamond jewelry are sold in 31 countries at over 700 locations worldwide as “The World’s Most Perfectly Cut Diamond.®” The company conducts Hearts On Fire University annually in Las Vegas for jewelers who sell Hearts On Fire diamonds, and their employees.

World Market Center’s Early Success Indicates Potential for World Jewelry Center

The early success of the World Market Center (WMC) in Las Vegas may be a strong indicator of the potential for the World Jewelry Center. Located across from the WJC’s home in Union Park, the WMC is a central marketplace for the home furnishings and accessories industry.

The WMC recently opened its second phase – a 16-story 1.6 million square-foot building – and the WMC hosted a market in February, with 50,000 in attendance. Phases I and II are pictured above (Photo courtesy of vegastodayandtomorrow.com.)

“There is clearly an important parallel between the World Market Center and the World Jewelry Center,” said WJC Managing Director Bill Boyajian. “The concept of a one-stop location for the home furnishings trade to do business in an ultra-modern setting built specifically for that industry is exactly what we’re planning for the gem and jewelry industry in our trade tower.”

CEO Harvey Dondero provided a detailed discussion of the WMC’s concept, current operations, and further development during an interview with In Business Las Vegas. Please click here to read that interview.
