A Message from Bill Boyajian
The JCK Show is the signature gem and jewelry industry event of the year in the U.S., and one of the most important globally as well. The world—at least the gem and jewelry world—comes to Las Vegas annually for this show, and its results provide strong indications of how successful the entire year will be for much of the U.S. jewelry trade.

In addition, this show creates a great networking opportunity through the vast array of dealers and business leaders from all corners of the world who attend. We will take full advantage of this opportunity with a major presence and full schedule of activities, starting even before the show begins.

Our entire team is completing plans for the World Jewelry Center’s JCK Show agenda, even as I wrap up another significant international trip to introduce more countries and markets to the World Jewelry Center. Along with our sales team, I visited Dubai, for the International Colored Gemstone Association Congress—where I also gave a keynote address;.then Vicenza for the Vicenzaoro Spring show, and productive meetings with Italian jewelry business leaders; and finally Moscow, for a dinner and presentation for leaders of the Russian jewelry industry.

In each location, I was met with enthusiasm and great interest by industry leaders and organizational heads who grasp the vision of the World Jewelry Center and understand how it can benefit them. From the easy transportation access to Las Vegas from anywhere, to its favorable tax laws, to the large variety of companies representing every sector of the industry, the advantages of the World Jewelry Center just cannot be matched.

We will explain those advantages, and many more, in detail throughout the JCK Show. On May 31, we will hold a press conference at the Mirage Hotel. We will update the jewelry media on the significant progress we have made, and where we go from here. Please see the article about the press conference in this issue of Insights.

On June 1, we will host a reception and presentation in the Lando Ballroom of the Venetian Hotel, starting at 6:30 p.m. I will be joined by Tommy Berry, a Foreign Trade Zone expert, who will discuss the many benefits of the Foreign Trade Zone that will be part of the World Jewelry Center. You can attend this event and still have enough time to attend JCK’s opening reception, immediately afterward. Another article in this edition of Insights has details, and your invitation.

We will also be touring the exhibit venues to meet people throughout the show. We will have two hospitality suites in the Venetian, where we will meet visitors for personal presentations and consultations. Please use the contact information below to schedule an appointment at your convenience.

The JCK Show occurs at an advantageous time of year for the gem and jewelry industry, as businesses gear up for their all-important year-end sales campaigns. It will likewise be an important event for the World Jewelry Center, and we look forward to meeting you there in person.

WJC Officials, Las Vegas Mayor to Update Media at Press Conference, May 31 World Jewelry Center Invites JCK Show Attendees to Reception, Presentation, June 1

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar B. Goodman will join World Jewelry Center Managing Director Bill Boyajian and Probity International President and CEO Robert Zarnegin in hosting a press conference May 31 at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

The press conference will be held from 4–5 p.m. in the St. Croix Room of the Mirage, with a reception from 5–6 p.m. in the same location. “We are looking forward to providing the jewelry trade media a complete update on the great progress we’ve made since we last met with the media on October 25, 2006 to announce the launch of the World Jewelry Center,” said WJC Managing Director Bill Boyajian.

Tommy Berry, an expert on Foreign Trade Zones (FTZ), will also participate. The World Jewelry Center will have its own FTZ, enabling goods to be imported with no duty being charged until the goods leave the FTZ and enter the commerce of the U.S. This is a major benefit and is often cited by business leaders in their decision to purchase space in the WJC.

Leaders of some of the firms who have already signed Letters of Intent (LOI) to purchase space in the WJC will also be there. “From our initial group of 10 leaders who signed LOIs, we have grown steadily and developed a diverse mix of firms from all sectors of the trade, and from many corners of the world. We will go into greater detail on this during the press conference,” said Boyajian.

Goodman’s vision for the development of Union Park, a new 61-acre master-planned community in downtown Las Vegas, gave rise to Zarnegin’s original concept for the WJC.

Media can RSVP for the press conference by sending an e-mail to aangelle@worldjewelrycenter.com, or by calling 858-216-5965.

The World Jewelry Center is inviting JCK Show attendees to a reception and special presentation on June 1, at 6:30 p.m., in the Lando Ballroom of the Venetian Hotel.

Following the reception, World Jewelry Center Managing Director Bill Boyajian will conduct a presentation on the new international hub for the gem and jewelry industry. He will discuss plans for the WJC and the advantages of owning space in the high-rise office trade tower.

Boyajian will be joined by Tommy Berry, an expert on Foreign Trade Zones (FTZ). The World Jewelry Center will have its own FTZ. Berry will explain the many benefits of operating a business in an FTZ, including substantial savings on customs fees. There is no duty charged on goods that are imported into an FTZ, until they are sold and enter the commerce of the U.S.

“We are really looking forward to introducing the World Jewelry Center to a great many people who are attending the JCK Show,” said Boyajian. “This show brings together thousands of business leaders from every part of the gem and jewelry industry, and every corner of the globe."

"I invite everyone to join us on June 1 to learn why there is so much enthusiasm for the World Jewelry Center throughout the industry, and how they can become part of it,” said Boyajian.

Boyajian Addresses ICA Congress on Meeting Current Market Challenges

In a keynote address to the 12th biennial International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) Congress in Dubai on May 7, World Jewelry Center Managing Director Bill Boyajian discussed the challenges presented by the changing nature of the colored gemstone trade, and advised attendees on techniques they can implement to gain a competitive edge.

Boyajian pointed out that traditional business models have changed as, for example, dealers often become manufacturers, and manufacturers have also become retailers. The resulting “squeeze” forces business leaders to adapt quickly and learn new market segments to be successful. Noting the shift to women self-purchasing jewelry, from the historical trend of men being the primary jewelry buyers, Boyajian said this presents a good opportunity for the colored stone trade. “Colored stones are ‘made’ for women and self-purchase,” he said. “The price points fit, and permission isn’t required.”

He added that the broad appeal of colored stones is another advantage in their marketing. They are not identified solely a “gift of love,” but rather as standard accessories in a woman’s wardrobe. Boyajian stressed the importance of creative entrepreneurship and the development of value-added products and services to gain leverage in the marketplace. “You must differentiate yourself in some way, and you must make your product or service better, cheaper, or faster to market than your competitors.”

He added, however, “Customer relationships are also important––perhaps even more so now than ever.” In fact, he said, “These relationships are the one element of a business that cannot be commoditized, so the time and energy invested can bring lasting rewards.”
