| A Message from Bill Boyajian | |
It may be true
that opposites attract, but there is also a lot of evidence to suggest
that those with similar characteristics find each other appealing as
well. I personally think the latter is true, especially when it comes
to the 90 gem and jewelry firms who have signed Letters of Intent to
reserve space in the World Jewelry Center.
When viewed individually, there is much to separate these companies − from their unique products to their home countries, and even their business models. But as a group − one that grows larger almost daily − they have a great deal in common. For one thing, they are all successful business leaders, as you would expect. They also share a passion for the beauty and artistry of jewelry. The list of similarities goes on, but in my opinion, the most important trait that all of these leaders possess is vision. Every industry or product that is now part of our lives started with a vision. The World Jewelry Center is a project unlike anything before it, so those who sign on are signaling their belief in a concept and their confidence in its potential, much as they did when they started their own businesses. This is clear in all of my presentations to jewelry industry leaders around the globe. The World Jewelry Center will create a jewelry marketplace that does not exist today. The traditional way of selling jewelry merchandise to the trade has transitioned from the individual going on the road from town to town and store to store, to the trade exhibition, and now the Internet. The jewelry industry needs a permanent, well-located, real marketplace at which to shop − a truly international gem and jewelry business hub. The WJC will be that place, and Las Vegas, with its business-friendly policies, international transportation network, and ever-growing population of both locals and tourists, is the perfect location. The WJC will do for the jewelry trade what the Chicago Merchandise Mart did for apparel, and what the new World Market Center in Las Vegas is doing for the home furnishings industry. Many of the world’s most prestigious and innovative gem and jewelry firms have already signed on. Please click here to see the latest list. If these are the kinds of companies you would like to do business with, please contact us at info@worldjewelrycenter.com to schedule a presentation and learn how you can benefit. |

| Gold Jewelry from India, Thailand Loses Duty-Free Privilege After GSP Review | Michigan Developer Plans 85-Acre Mixed-Use Project Near Union Park |
| President
Bush has ended the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) benefit that
previously lifted the duty on gold jewelry imports from India, and
those goods will now be subject to a 5.5 percent import duty, according
to a report published by Rapaport News.
Duty-free status was also revoked on gold jewelry from Thailand as a result of this year’s annual review, which covered numerous different products and countries. Companies who participate in the World Jewelry Center’s Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) may be able to offset these fees. Duty is charged only when goods leave the FTZ and enter the commerce of the U.S., resulting in cash-flow savings. No duty is owed on goods that are re-exported. In addition, goods can be stored in a secure environment indefinitely within the FTZ. For a detailed summary of benefits of the WJC’s FTZ, please click here. According
to a June 24 report published by GlobeSt.com, Real Estate Interests
Group of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan has received approval from the Las
Vegas City Council for an 85-acre mixed-use project near Union Park,
home of the World Jewelry Center. Plans call for a combination of more than 9,000 hotel rooms, condominiums, and timeshare units, plus 3.5 million square feet of permanent exhibition space, 1.2 million square feet of commercial/retail space, 300,000 square feet of gaming space, and a 22,000 seat sports arena, according to the report. The development will be located in an area of Las Vegas bordered by East Charleston Boulevard, West Wyoming Street, Main Street, and the Union Pacific railroad tracks. “A project of this size and diversity is yet another strong indicator of both the sustained growth of Las Vegas and the increasing variety in the kinds of businesses the city is attracting,” said World Jewelry Center Managing Director Bill Boyajian. |
| WJC Company Profile—Alan Friedman Designs | |
Friedman is a third-generation jeweler whose unique creations have consistently reinforced his reputation as one of the world’s most innovative jewelers. Literally growing up in the industry, Alan, along with his family, owned and operated the Omaha-based Borsheim’s, the largest independent jewelry store in the United States. In 1992, Alan relocated to Los Angeles after meeting and marrying his wife, Layna Silvagni Friedman, who was the President and CEO of Silvagni Entertainment. They opened Alan Friedman designs in Beverly Hills. At about the same time, Alan began to work with natural pink diamonds, which have become his signature. Dubbed “King of Pinks” by the industry, he is regarded as an authority on these very rare diamonds. Alan and Layna signed a new partnership with toymaker Mattel, best known for their Barbie brand. “Barbie Rocks by Layna and Alan Friedman” is a co-branded fine-jewelry collection of pink diamonds, precious and semi-precious stones, and rare metals, due this fall at department stores, specialty boutiques, jewelry stores, and the Alan Friedman boutique in Beverly Hills. Friedman said, “When I first heard about the World Jewelry Center in Las Vegas, I loved the idea, and thought it was a great concept to build an iconic trade tower next to a world-class retail jewelry center for the public. I’m really excited about opening a wholesale office in the tower and a store in the retail center.” “As one of the world’s top jewelry designers and innovators, Alan will provide an exciting experience for the shoppers who visit his boutique store,” said WJC Managing Director Bill Boyajian. “He will also be an important dealer in the office tower. We warmly welcome his participation.” |

According to an article in the Las Vegas Review Journal,
a new real-estate investment report by Marcus & Millichap Real
Estate Investment Services and CB Richard Ellis, Las Vegas will remain
a prosperous retail market this year and well into the future.
Fueling this encouraging forecast are factors including consistent population increases, job growth, and residential rent escalation. The city's continuous population expansion is also resulting in more jobs in the professional and business occupations, which in turn adds to retailer demand, according to the report. Please click here to read the entire article. Lev Leviev, one of the world’s largest diamantaires, is buying a major stake in a Las Vegas development company, according to a report published by Rapaport News. The 60-acre property, located near the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, will be used for several projects, including hotels, a convention hall, and a casino. Please click here to read the article. |
